Optistruct Lessons Learned from a Cambered Structure with Welds made Post-Decambering using Modchg
Problem Description
- A pre-cambered trailer is loaded to nearly flat under 1g down by a permanent payload (large steel transformer oil reservoir box).
- As the payload is loaded, the trailer is 'de-cambered." They payload is then welded in place to the trailer.
- Other operational load cases are applied as the subsequent load cases to the de-cambering load. Topology optimization is conducted with responses from both de-cambering load case and subsequent load cases.
- All subsequent analysis must take into account the de-cambering held in place by the welds. The de-camber is a "large displacement" formulation and the loading happens via sliding contact with the payload box.

Near-Field RCS for Automotive Radar Applications
With the growing effort to improve road safety, an accurate characterization of the automotive targets is important. Automotive radar is one of the sensors among others that help detect and identify targets. This paper introduces a method of calculating the radar cross section (RCS) of any arbitrary complex target at near field range; also known as, “near-field RCS” (NF-RCS). In this paper, near-field RCS is calculated not only as a function of range but also as a function of aspect angle. Computational electromagnetic methods are used to calculate the near-field RCS of a metal plate and a vehicle as targets. The use of simulation to calculate near-field RCS improves the design process, reduces testing time and cost.

Highly Optimized Passive Lubrication System for an EV Transmission

Optimising the rotational losses of an EV transmission is essential to improve range. Whilst bearing and gear losses are well understood, the interaction between rotating components and transmission fluid rarely exploited other than reducing lubricant viscosity. Effective methods for modelling drag and fluid transfer around a transmission have not robustly existed previously.



Converting electrical power into mechanical power to drive a fluid pump is wasteful. However, in tightly packaged EV transmissions where thermal cooling is limited it is essential to manage the lubricant. A novel method for passively moving fluid around an EV transmission with low losses has been developed. The system uses existing components in the gearbox to move fluid in a controlled manner. The cost savings of using this technology can be used directly elsewhere to improve vehicle range.



In order to iterate through potential design solutions a suitable computer based modelling approach had to be developed. A new smoothed particle hydrodynamics approach was created to predict the fluid movement and the drag level on the remaining components. A correlation of this approach was carried out with real world testing to prove its validity.

Even during building roads your approach may be different from the standard one. The nature often forces engineers to use their creativity and go beyond typical projects. This leads to some unique, futuristic structures or some additional projects that have to be done and at the end are invisible. Our project of heavy lift barge contains in the second group. One part of this project was to proof that positioning system is sufficient to keep right position at the sea even during unfavorable weather conditions. Composites Driving Innovation: Development of a Sit-Ski as an Advanced Technology Demonstrator
The National Composites Centre (NCC), in collaboration with the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC), Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) and University of Warwick (WMG) worked on a collaborative project to develop a Cross-Catapult technology demonstrator; the Mono-Ski or Sit-ski, a device for sports that uses adaptive equipment on mountain slopes, designed for individuals with lower extremity limitations. Composites were used extensively in the new Sit-ski design with the Altair HyperWorks™ suite being utilized throughout the development process.

Optimization of Spacecraft Metallic Primary Structure with OptiStruct
Spacecraft primary structure is designed to react all the major loads imparted on a spacecraft. Inadequately designed or tested primary structure can result in structure failure during launch and endanger mission success. To maximize the useful payload to orbit, primary structures are typically designed to minimize mass while maximizing strength and stiffness characteristics. Identifying an optimal balance of these three design characteristics can be challenging due to the extensive number of load cases applicable to the primary structure. For this study, multiple finite element models (FEM) are optimized to define a metallic panel capable of reacting launch loads and supporting a large secondary payload mounted to the panel. To react the launch loads, the panel strength margins are evaluated and the secondary payload’s 1st bending mode is maximized to reduce dynamic coupling with the launch vehicle dynamic environment. For the optimization, the mass is constrained to not exceed an available mass budget. The primary structure panel is connected to a generic spacecraft bus representative of a typical Northrop Grumman satellite.

Zaha Hadid Architects' Volu Pavilion - Stunning Form Optimized through Simulation
Zaha Hadid Computation and Design (co|de) team had to create a contemporary dining pavilion that combines computational design, lightweight engineering, and precision fabrication. To create this unique structure, the design team used Altair HyperWorks. With the Altair OptiStruct topology optimization algorithm the geometry was analyzed under structural loads, the pavilion’s structural system and skin were optimized to remove unnecessary material, resulting in the lightest possible, yet stable design.

Ultra-Fast High-Fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics on GPUs for Automotive Aerodynamics
In this white paper, we present the innovative commercial GPU-based Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solver Altair ultraFluidX. This work features simulations of the DrivAer model, a generic, publicly available vehicle geometry that was developed by the Chair of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics at the Technical University of Munich and which is widely used for testing and validation purposes.

The DrivAer model features rear end, underbody designs, and underhood flow. This model was then used to perform both wind tunnel tests and numerical simulations of the 40% scale open cooling geometry using perforated aluminum sheets with different opening ratios to mimic different radiator properties. Within, we will compare some of the results from these wind tunnel tests with numerical results obtained with Altair ultraFluidX.
